Health and Wellness » Ayurvedic Treatments » Ayurveda Treatment for ArthritisAyurveda, the science of life, has treatment for almost every ailment that a human body can probably suffer from. From simple diseases like cold and fever to the more complicated ones like diabetes and cancer, ayurveda promises to treat each one of them most effectively. Arthritis is a painful and one of the most common chronic diseases which affects the joints. Although a lot of research has been done, no specific cure has been found for it, this is the reason why more and more people are turning to ayurveda for treatment of arthritis. Ayurveda states that arthritis results from excess of ama and lack of agni (digestive fire) which is caused by poor digestion and a weakened colon. This results in the accumulation of undigested food and waste matter in the body. Poor digestion lets toxins get accumulated in the body, and hence the problems with the colon allow the toxins to reach the joints. Ayurveda distinguishes arthritis in three categories, each corresponding to vata, pitta, and kapha respectively.
General Treatment of Arthritis
The best way to treat arthritis is to first determine its type and then manage it for the remedies recommended for that specific type. However, incase you do not know whether the arthritis is vata, pitta, or kapha arthritis, then you can take 1 teaspoon triphala at night with 1/2 to 1 cup warm water. For specific arthritis, following are recommended with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon with warm water:
- For vata-type arthritis -Haritaki
- For pitta-type Amalaki
- For kapha-type arthritis Bibbitaki
Ayurveda recommends some general techniques to help in increasing the intensity of the digestive fire to burn up the toxins that harm the body.
Ayurveda detoxification diet
A three- to five-day detoxification diet is generally prescribed along with vegetables, juices, spices and herbs during the fast, which lasts until the body starts showing the signs that the digestive fire is burning strong. These signs mostly include return of the appetite, feeling of lightness and a clear coating on the tongue.
Use of herbal, medicinal or essential oils
Oils play a very important role in ayurveda treatments. Various oils may be applied to the skin to help the body get rid of toxins, relieve pain and restore mobility. Some oils that are beneficial in arthritis are Mahanarayan oil mixed with sesame oil, Narayan oil and Avipattikar churna.
Use of herbs, spices and bitters
Herbs, spices and bitters are primarily used in ayurveda for a majority of diseases. These are either applied externally or ingested and are believed to cleanse the body to relieve pain and stiffness. Some benficail herbs are mint, ephedra, golden seal, gentian, nirgundi, eucalyptus leaves, prasarini, quassia, coptis, scute, phellodendrom, aloe, guggul, du huo, ligusticum, Siberian ginseng, myrrh, and yucca.
