Types of astigmatism refractive surgeries:

  1. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK): In this surgery some of the outer protective layer of the cornea is removed. This method can be moderate to very painful and can take up to one month for vision to recover.
  2. Laser epithelial Keratectomy: In this procedure alcohol is used to loosen the surface of the cornea. This method is less painful as compare to Photorefractive keratectomy but slightly more painful than laser in situ keratectomy.
  3. Laser in situ keratectomy: In this procedure eye surgeon use a device called a keratome to make a thin, round hinged cut into the cornea. This procedure causes less pain than the other two methods.

Causes of Astigmatism:

Astigmatism is caused due to unevenly shaped cornea. The uneven shape cornea causes the rays of light to focus on two points on the retina which results in distortion and blurring of images. Astigmatism is mostly caused due to family history, pressure from the eyelids on the cornea, incorrect posture and increased use of the eyes for close work.
