Glaucoma surgery:

Glaucoma surgery includes either laser treatment or making cut in the eye to reduce the intraocular pressure. The type of surgery your ophthalmologist recommends will depend on the type and severity of your glaucoma and the overall health of your eye. Ophthalmologists usually recommend laser surgery before conventional filtering microsurgery except the eye pressure is high or the optic nerve is poorly damaged. During laser surgery ophthalmologist use a tiny but powerful beam of light to make several small scars in the eye’s trabecular meshwork. It is performed to increase the flow of fluids out of the eye.

In conventional filtering microsurgery a drainage hole is created with the use of a small surgical tool. Ophthalmologists recommend this surgery when laser surgery does not successfully lower eye pressure or the eye pressure begins to rise. Recovery form glaucoma surgery requires two to four weeks. At times patient may take up to two months for glaucoma surgery results. Conventional filtering microsurgery includes risks such as bleeding, infection, discomfort and pain. A loss of extra eye pressure can result in a loss of vision.
