Types of refractive surgery:

  1. Lasik: In this surgery the laser energy not aimed directly on the outer surface of the cornea. An instrument named keratome is used to create a thin corneal flap before the surgery. This flap is moved distant and the laser beam is aimed at the exposed cornea. After the laser treatment the protective corneal flap is then put back in its original place. In laser treatment the healing and recovery of vision is quicker as compare to PRK.
  2. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK): Excimer laser PRK is performed as an outpatient procedure. Prior to the treatment, anesthetic drops are put in the eyes to numb it.
  3. Radial keratotomy: this surgery is not currently being performed due to the advantage of excimer laser procedures.
  4. Excimer lasik (laser in situ keratomileusis): It is a surgery that involves the use of excimer laser to reduce or eliminate myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism permanently.
