Retinoblastoma is one of the common eye cancers in children. This cancer originates from the retina in the eye. Although retinoblastoma cancer can occur at any age but it most often occurs in the younger children. The cancer can be in one eye only or in both eyes. - Eye exam: This is a test of the eye in which the pupil is dilated with dedicated eye drops to allow the eye surgeon to look through the lens and pupil to the retina. The surgeon examine inside the eye including the retina with a light. this test can be done under a anesthesia.
- Ultrasound: It is a procedure in which high energy sound waves are bounced off internal tissues and make echoes which form a picture of body tissues.
- Computer tomography (CT) scan: It is a procedure that makes a series of detailed picture of areas inside the eye.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): It is a procedure which involves use of magnet, radio waves, and a computer to make series of detailed pictures of areas inside the eye.
Retinoblastoma Treatments in India:
There are many types of treatments for retinoblastoma.
- Enucleation: In this treatment eye with the tumor is removed and is sent for pathology report. Artificial eye that can be made of plastic, rubber or coral is implanted. The artificial that is replaced does not have any vision.
- External beam radiation: this treatment involves focusing a beam of radiation on the eye. This treatment is very effective as the tumor is very radiosensitive. However radiation can cause damage to the surroundings of the eye and it also increases a chance of developing secondary tumor.
- Localized plaque radiation therapy: This method involves applying of radioactive plaque around the tumor on the sclera.
- Photocoagulation (laser therapy): This treatment is effective and safe for tumors that are smaller in size. It will help in preserving eye as well as sight of the child.
- Cryotherapy: This treatment involves freezing of the tumor by applying a special probe on the external surface of the eye. It is performed under direct observation and is effective in saving eye and sight of child with small tumor.
- Chemotherapy: This treatment involves use of drugs that can destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy drugs can be taken by mouth or injected into a vein.
