ICSI or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is a special process of inserting the sperm into the egg. ICSI is usually practiced in the course of IVF or in vitro fertilization treatment. In IVF treatment, the egg of the female and sperm of the male are placed collectively and during the process it is expected that the sperm might fertilize the egg. In case the sperm does not fertilize the male egg, then the embryologist takes a step ahead and performs ICSI. In ICSI, the sperm is directly inserted into the egg for fertilization.

Reasons why ICSI is recommended

ICSI is recommended majorly in cases of male infertility. When a male patient is suffering from severe infertility issues such as Oligospermia, Asthenozoospermia or Teratozoospermia then Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is suggested. Before going deep into what is ICSI let us know better the cases in which it is needed.

ICSI is needed under following circumstances /cases:

Oligospermia: Oligospermia is a very common infertility condition in men in which the semen of the male has very low or no sperm count.

Asthenozoospermia: Asthenozoospermia is another infertility problem of males in which the sperms of the semen cannot move about vigorously to fertilize an egg. At times a rare situation pops up in which a man ejaculates but sperms are not present in the ejaculation. In such a situation through a process call TESE, the doctors make sperm recovery and in such cases it is extremely vital to undergo the process of ICSI.

Teratozoospermia: It is a situation in which male ejaculates sperms which does not look like the normal sperms.

The process of ICSI

As mentioned earlier, the process of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is practiced at the even of In Vitro Fertilization treatments. Both these procedures are practiced by skilled medical practitioners in a lab. In this process the doctor provide the patient with drugs that will stimulate the ovaries after which an egg can be extracted from it. Soon after the egg extraction, with the help of male sperm sample the embryologist inserts sperm into every recovered egg. After the insertion of the sperm into the egg, doctors have to make sure if the fertilization was successful. In case it was, the doctor places back the embryo in the uterus.
