A sperm bank also known as a cryobank is a system which is maintained to collect the human sperms and store them. The sperm banks collect sperms with the help of sperm donors. The collection of sperms in the sperm banks is basically done to achieve pregnancies with through the means of third party reproduction. The sperm donated by the donor are inseminated into the female uterus to fertilize her eggs so that she conceives. In simpler words, the duty of a sperm bank is to gather, filter and dispense out the sperms. They can be just known as the middleman between the two parties, i.e. the donor and the client. Usually the donors of sperms join programs especially meant for sperm donation and enter into weekly donations.

What is typical donor process?

The typical donor process is that the donor of the sperms needs to go to the sperm bank keeping in mind his weekly appointment. Here he is taken to a private room where he is supposed to provide a semen sample in a clean empty container especially meant for the purpose. At times the donor is also given the facility of providing the sample from their own place, keeping in mind their ease. The sperm banks often provide the donor with overnight collection kit.

Sample screening

Soon after a sample is received by the technicians of the sperm banks, they perform complete screening of the sample. The screening of the sample includes test if the semen is infected with any sort of STDs or is in the grasp of some hereditary disease. Basically the sample of the semen should undergo test for everything from Tay Sachs disease to the HIV positive infections. After the testing, the time comes when the sperm should be kept quarantined for a period of six months. After the expiration of 6 months, it can be dispensed off to the recipient.

Sperm preservation in sperm banks

The samples obtained from the donor are preserved by freezing. The process of freezing and preserving the samples is known as Cryopreservation. These samples are handled carefully in a solution so that they are not in any way harmed in the process of thawing and freezing. Soon after it, they are poured in vials, which are immediately sealed and then frozen at a temperature of -320 degrees F in liquid nitrogen vapor.
