  • Automatic Non-Invasive BP Measurement - This measurement requires electric supply wherein, only a single cuff is wrapped around the patient�s arm. A machine blows the cuff and when it is slowly deflated, a sensor measures the tiny oscillations in the cuff�s pressure caused by pulse rate. You get the systolic reading when the pulsations start, mean pressure when the pulsations are maximum and diastolic reading when the pulsations disappear finally.
  • Digital Monitors - These have manual or automatic cuffs wherein the BP reading gets flashed on a small screen.
  • Electronic Devices� Here, mercury is not used
  • Oscillotonometer - This device allows measuring of both systolic and diastolic pressure without a stethoscope. It contains a bleed valve, a control lever, one large dial to read the pressures and two overlapping cuffs. When you inflate and wrap the cuff around your arm, adjust the bleed valve and gradually pull the force. Soon after you pull the control lever towards you; the needle jumps a little with the pulse. When the cuff pressure moves towards the systolic pressure, the needle moves speedily. You must release the lever to get the systolic pressure and pull the lever forward all over again, so that when the pressure is reduced, the needle jumps again swiftly. When you loosen the lever at maximum needle oscillations, the dial gives you the mean arterial pressure and when it is released, the dial gives you the diastolic pressure.
  • Invasive Arterial Pressure Measurement - Invasive arterial pressure measurement helps you to constantly monitor your BP readings by every beat wherein a graph of pressure against time is displayed. Here, arterial pressure is directly measured by placing a cannula in an artery. For this, you need to connect the cannula to a sterile, fluid-filled system, which is attached to an electronic monitor.
