Oral cancer is any cancerous tissue growth located in the mouth. Oral cancer is usually the neck and head cancer which refers to the group of similar cancers that originate in head, neck and within mouth and throat. Oral cancer ranks number one among men and number three among women. Oral cancer constitutes 12% of all cancers in men and 8% of all cancers in women. The treatment for oral cancer is surgery and in advanced cases of disease, surgery is followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy.   • Other factors are trauma, heat and irritation from sharp teeth, ill fitting dentures and restored fillings.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer

  • Discomfort
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Feeling of a mass present or growing within oral cavity
  • Toothache
  • Limited mouth opening
  • Excessive uncommon bleeding
  • A non healing ulcer in oral cavity
  • Swelling on the gums
  • Earache

Diagnosis of Oral Malignancy

If examination of oral and neck region show hard lump of tissues that may indicate cancer. A patient is assessed for any white, red or mixed lesion in mouth.
  • Microscopic examination of tissue from lesion is the best method to confirm cancer. It gives exact type and nature of cancer.
  • Imaging the lesion by x ray film, CT scan and by another diagnostic technique help in defining the location and extent of cancerous growth
