Fracture splints are the support given when the fracture takes place. Fracture can take place due to exertion, stress, accident or some kind of physical activity. When such situation comes make sure you take immediate action till the health care expert arrives.

Fractures Splints

Though fracture splints are two different concepts, the only thing which is common in both is they are related to bone injury. These two injuries can take place due to exertion, stress, accident or some kind of physical activity. Make sure when either of these injuries take place, you have to take immediate action or visit a doctor.

Knowing About Fractures Splints

What is a Bone Fracture?

Fracture usually takes place when the bone gets completely broken. During such time, the bone fragments destroy all the nearby blood vessels and tissues. This results in the blood clots and swelling in the area of damage. The tissues near the fractured area which are damaged, quickly responds to the injury. Such tissues divide themselves to form a collar of tissue surrounding the fractured site. The tissues which lose the blood supply get damaged instantly. Whereas, the tissues which lose the blood supply have more chances to die.

However, in the whole event, the new bone gets developed from the undamaged tissue to deal with the damaged area.

How to Recognize a Fracture

  1. The patients find it difficult to move a limb or part of it. Suppose the fracture is detected at some bone of the arm. During such case, the patient cannot even move his fingers.
  2. Pulse is lost when the pain becomes unbearable
  3. There is a severe pain at the rib cage when patient takes a deep breath
  4. Muscle spasms become involuntary
  5. Patient loses the sensation at the end of the extremity
  6. Skin becomes red around the injured part
  7. Sensations become numb

Common Fracture taking Place

Stress fracture is something which has become common due to over exertion or lot of physical activity performed. When such fractures occur, the cracks are either in the lower leg bones or at the fibula. During such situations, you will feel unbearable pain at the lower third part of the shin. There will be swelling at the affected area too.

Ignoring Fracture

If you ignore such injury, you will have to face extreme pain. There will be more damage of the soft tissues which might take long time to get healed. The disruption of the bones can make the healing process slow. The chance of permanent disability also becomes more.

What is a Splint?

Splint is applied to lessen the movement for providing support through the stabilization of an injury. During emergencies, splints are used to stabilize the injury which do not occur immediately, but have more chances to affect the bones. These hidden injuries are later detected by the health care expert for whom definitive casting is performed. They are said to be initial immobilizations in the pre-surgical period.

Humeral fractures are usually treated with the initial cooptation splint. You can apply it by hanging the arm cast or a functional brace. Humerus fracture needs surgical treatment if there is severe soft tissue injury, blood vessels get affected, a pathologic fracture is detected or where at open fracture the bone penetrates the skin. If the fracture is distal humerous or proximal, you cannot treat it with coaptation splint. For such injury, an orthopedic surgeon is needed or some health care provider who is well qualified in this area can treat it well. Make sure you consult a doctor regarding treating humerous fracture immediately.

Thus, it can be said that fractures splints help in immobilizing the injured part temporarily. You must know that fracture like humerous gets stabilized with a splint before you are taken to the hospital. This lessens the risk of getting additional injury and provides relief for time being.
