Sleep apnea is a disease which occurs due to interruption of breathing during sleep. The breathing interruption causes abnormal oxygen and blood level which results in fatigue, cognitive, cardiovascular and emotional disorders. Sleep apnea is a common sleeping disorder in United States. This disorder is more common in men than in women. There are various symptoms of sleep apnea.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Apnea usually occurs during sleep. When it occurs, sleep gets disrupted due to lack of breathing and poor oxygen level in blood. This is meant as the patient wakes up early and also can be known as the person comes out of a deeper sleep to a shallow sleep. A hypo apnea is the decrease in breathing which is not as dangerous as apnea. Hypo apnea occurs while sleeping. There are various causes of sleep apnea. Obstructions of irregular brain signals and obstruction of airways are the two main causes of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is mostly caused due to the relaxation of soft tissues at the backside of the throat which block the passage of air. This results in obstructive sleep apnea. The central sleep apnea caused due to irregularity in the nervous system to provide brain's normal signals to breathe.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

The symptoms of sleep can last for long or can go and come again. This disease varies among individuals. Some patients of sleep apnea have various symptoms while some of them do not show any symptom. The symptoms like severe problems with sleep, difficulty in concentration, irritability, decrease in blood oxygen level and fatigue. Sleep apnea can be treated if you try to change your lifestyle, breathing device or surgery.

Common Symptoms of Central and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

  • Loud snoring which is the most common symptom in obstructive sleep apnea
  • Awakening with a sore throat or a dry mouth and a morning headache
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness and breathing cessation during sleep
  • Abrupt awakening due to shortness of breath which states the central sleep apnea.
  • Problem while staying asleep

Above symptoms indicate that you are suffering from sleep apnea. Here are some symptoms which can be dangerous and need to be consulted with a doctor.

  • There is a shortness of breath which awakens you from sleep. Snoring which disturbs the sleep of others.
  • There are intermittent pauses while breathing during sleep. Excessive daytime drowsiness which may make you fall asleep while you are busy working, driving or watching television.
  • Most of the people do not think that snoring is the serious problem that is to be discussed with a doctor and is a cause for sleep apnea. But it is always better to discuss the issue with an expert, so that you do not face any major consequences later.
