In the past it was considered as a direct way of self realization. It is still being practiced due to very similar reason but some of its reasons have changed. The practice of yoga came into existence during that time due to the yogis and religious people who were striving to attain moksha. It was considered that continuous practice of meditation and yoga can take the person to god. It is a philosophical truth that the basic requirement of the man is that his internal self or Jiva should unite to the external self or Brahman. This union is the ultimate goal to reach God. Vedic Facts about Yoga According to the Vedas and yogis, God is nothing but a transcendent power who is the creator of everything and our soul needs to join with the spiritual power which is nothing but God Himself. The soul would never move from the human body until and unless the person adopts some means to get them united. This can be done by yoga. It was even believed that the unification of the soul to the unique power would help the person in moving away from the vicious circle of life and death which means he would attain moksha. This was true in Indian history. Yoga is a way of getting attached to the god by the means of soul. Our mind has a unique power which can reach far beyond without the movement of the physical body. Spirituality is the real purpose of the act of yoga. Human soul can get united with the supreme power of the creator. Meditation can help in making this possible.
